Food Skills
Food Skills Programs foster community by bringing people of all cultures and abilities together through healthy food. Programs are fun, supportive spaces where people learn and develop vital skills that can help to make the most of a limited food budget. Foundational programs teach basic nutrition, meal planning, foodsafe, seasonal eating and preservation techniques. We also work to develop and support participant-led programs that celebrate the wealth of experience, skills and talent that our members bring to our community. Through these leadership opportunities, programs are grounded in lived experience and feature everything from adaptive cooking techniques to cuisine from around the world.
SUPPER CLUB FOR FAMILIES
Supper Club brings families together for shared weekly meals over a two-month series. Each week, one family leads the meal, preparing a favourite recipe for the group with support from our kitchen staff. Families rotate through cooking, cleaning, and guest roles -creating a shared sense of responsibility and celebration.
Children cook alongside adults, building confidence and practical kitchen skills in a supportive environment. The group collectively decides what to prepare, reflecting the diverse cultures and traditions within the community.
Plenty of food is made each week, and leftovers are shared so families can take meals home. Supper Club for Families is more than a meal – it is a consistent space for connection, peer support, and joyful, multigenerational learning.
ELDERS’ KITCHEN
Elders’ Kitchen is a seasonal lunch club for community members aged 55 and over, running through the summer and early fall. Each month, participants gather to cook, share a meal, and connect in a welcoming and supportive space.
Elders take turns helping to prepare and clean up the meal with support from staff and volunteers. The program is relaxed and inclusive, celebrating the bounty of the season while creating space for conversation, storytelling, and meaningful connection.
Participants also receive seasonal Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupons through a provincial healthy eating initiative, increasing access to fresh, local food. Accessibility supports are available to ensure everyone can fully participate.
YOUTH AFTER SCHOOL COOKING PROGRAM
Pilot: April – May 2026
Our Youth After School Cooking Program is a bi-weekly program for youth ages 12–17 to socialize, learn to cook, and build practical life skills in a supportive environment.
Designed by youth, for youth, the program is shaped by participants’ ideas and interests. Youth decide what they want to make, lead the cooking process, and learn together. Adults provide ingredients and guidance, but leadership stays with the group.
Participants prepare lunches for the week and cook dinners to share with their families — building confidence, independence, and connection both in the kitchen and at home.
COMMUNITY MEALS
Community Meals are welcoming, family-friendly gatherings for registered members to share a nutritious meal and connect with one another. This program was successfully piloted last fall and will relaunch this spring. Dates to be announced.
MEAL kITS
Throughout the year, our team assembles and distributes hundreds of seasonally inspired Meal Kits to support households experiencing food insecurity.
Each kit includes fresh ingredients, a printed recipe, and practical cooking tips to help participants prepare a nutritious meal at home with confidence. Recipes are designed to be affordable, adaptable, and accessible — requiring minimal equipment and accommodating a range of cooking experience levels.
Kits can be tailored to support food allergies and dietary needs, ensuring that families receive meals that work for them. Meal Kits extend learning beyond our kitchen walls, bringing healthy, achievable cooking into homes across our community.
CULTURAL CELEBRATIONS
Our Cultural Celebrations honour the diversity of our community through food, storytelling, and shared experience. These programs create space for participants to share traditions, recipes, and the cultural meaning behind the meals they prepare.
Offered through in-person cooking programs, food demonstrations, cooking videos, and event meal kits, Cultural Celebrations invite the broader community to learn and celebrate together. Past programs have highlighted Diwali, Ramadan, Yalda, Ukrainian Verenyky, Christmas meals, and many other traditions.
By centering culture and lived experience, these programs foster understanding, pride, and connection — reminding us that food is a powerful bridge between people.
PARTICIPANT LED PROGRAMS
Who better to teach affordable, delicious cooking than the people who do it every day?
Participant-Led Programs recognize the expertise within our community. Many of the people who access our services bring deep culinary knowledge, cultural food traditions, and lived experience navigating food on a limited budget.
We work alongside participants who are interested in stepping into leadership roles to teach cooking programs, lead food demonstrations, and share their skills with peers. These programs are rooted in lived experience and mutual learning.
Honorariums and transportation support are provided to reduce barriers and recognize the value of participants’ time and knowledge. Participant-led programming strengthens confidence, builds leadership pathways, and ensures our programs reflect the voices of our community.
SEASONAL CLASSES
Our Seasonal Cooking Classes celebrate what is fresh and abundant from local farms and our backyard gardens. Participants learn to prepare simple, nourishing meals inspired by the flavours of the season.
We also offer hands-on canning and food preservation classes, helping participants extend the harvest and reduce food waste. These classes build practical skills while strengthening connection to local food systems and seasonal eating.
Seasonal Classes encourage participants to cook with confidence, creativity, and an awareness of what is growing around them.
FOUNDATIONAL LEARNING
Our Foundational Learning programs focus on the basics that build confidence in the kitchen. Topics include FoodSafe practices, basic nutrition, meal planning, knife skills, and essential cooking techniques.
These in-person classes create supportive, hands-on learning environments where participants can strengthen practical skills and ask questions without judgment.
We also publish a monthly Pantry to Plate recipe, featuring a meal that can be made exclusively with ingredients available through our Pantry that month. In addition to in-person classes, we create instructional videos and accessible resources to extend learning beyond the kitchen.
Foundational Learning equips participants with the tools and confidence to prepare healthy, affordable meals at home.
